NEACJS 2025 David Orrick Student Paper Competition

Three awards are given in recognition of outstanding scholarly work by students. Awards are offered in three categories: graduate, undergraduate, and community college. The first-place paper for each category (masters or doctoral graduate student, undergraduate, community college) will receive $200 and the second-place paper for each category will receive $100. All winners will receive a one-year membership for NEACJS.  

Awards will be presented at the Annual Meeting in June, 2025, Prince Edward Island, and the student award recipients and/or their NEACJS faculty sponsor should be present for the ceremony to accept the award. All entrants, regardless of the competition outcome, should plan to present their papers at the annual meeting if possible. The winners will be notified by email shortly after the final decisions are made on April 15th.

Submissions must be emailed by a NEACJS faculty sponsor to neacjs@gmail.com (with “NEACJS Student paper” in the subject line) by Tuesday, April 1st, 2025, at 11:59pm.

NEACJS is currently seeking nominations for three student scholarships. Below is further information about each individual scholarship. All nominations and supporting letters are due by April 11, 2025. Please send nominations and supporting letters to committee chair, Jennifer Balboni: jbalboni0608@curry.edu

All nominations must be made by current members. Awards include $250 and a one year membership to NEACJS. Awards will be presented at the Annual Meeting in June, 2025, in Prince Edward Island, Canada.

 

Student Scholarships

 

The Michael Israel Graduate Student Scholarship

The Scholarship is presented in honor of Mike Israel to recognize his contributions to public policy and criminal justice. The Scholarship is awarded annually to a student pursuing a graduate degree in Criminal Justice or Criminology. Student nominees must have completed one semester of graduate study. Nominations must include a letter of recommendation and a copy of the student’s resume.

Gerhard O. W. Mueller and Freda Adler

Undergraduate Student Scholarship

 This Scholarship is presented in honor of Gerhard Mueller and Freda Adler to recognize their contributions to public policy and criminal justice. The Scholarship is awarded annually to a student pursuing an undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice or Criminology. Student nominees must be admitted to or matriculated to a CC, College or University. Nominees must have a Grade Point Average of 3.5 (or above) and have contributed to Criminal Justice outside of the classroom. Please include a letter of recommendation and a copy of the student’s resume and transcript. 

Patrick J. Ryan Community College Student Scholarship* 

This scholarship is presented in honor of Patrick J. Ryan to recognize his many contributions to the field of criminal justice higher education. As a non-traditional student and life-long learner, Dr. Ryan was a role model for all students to emulate. The NEACJS Scholarship is awarded annually to a student pursuing a lower-division two-year degree in Criminal Justice or Criminology. Student nominees must be admitted to or matriculated in a two-year lower division or community college degree program. Nominations must include a letter of recommendation from one of the student’s instructors. Please send a current resume for nominee. Candidates must have earned at least 30 credits in an accredited criminal justice program located within the NEACJS region; possess a GPA of 3.0 or greater; and have completed at least 30% of degree specific courses with a 3.0 or greater GPA in those courses.
